The original Glanford Greenhouse has been on their Glanford Road location since the 1920’s. Their family has been operating the same greenhouse since 1960, when they grew only hothouse tomatoes and cucumbers. Three generations later, Doug and Ling Eng have expanded their produce varieties to include peppers, eggplants, basil, lettuce, beans, and much more! On this tour, we will learn about the glass structure that is the foundation of their operation. The Greenhouses is a "venlo" style glass greenhouse with heat from a natural gas boiler, circulating hot water in pipe rails. The environment is controlled manually without the aid of computers. Greenhouse plants are started in February and grown in coco peat slabs and fed with hydroponic nutrients through the irrigation. Pests are controlled using biological controls.

Joel grew up in Cobble Hill on his family’s dairy farm. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from uVic in 2015. He later studied Process Engineering at Dalhousie University. In 2015, he started working for FTG (Stanhope Organics at that time) as a summer student, eventually joining full-time as GM in 2021 when the farm underwent a transfer of ownership.

    Park beside/near office."

"Yard will be muddy - bring waterproof footwear.

Blueberry Production plus a bonus Wash/Pack Station Tour with Heather Stretch, Operator of Northbrook Farm
We will spend most of our time in the blueberry field, covering everything from fertility to disease management to various marketing strategies.  Although we'll be talking about blueberries, many of the principles will apply to other perennial crops.  We'll then move up to our wash/pack area where we will talk about how our veggie washing/packing system has evolved.  Please bring your own ideas to share... all the best ideas come from peer-to-peer learning.

Heather has operated Northbrook Farm for 25 years, and has been a partner at Saanich Organics nearly that long.  Some people know her primarily as an organic veggie farmer, but when she meets families in her neighbourhood they invariably say "Oh, you mean that U-pick blueberry farm on Mt Newton?  We love that place"

Maintaining Perennials for Cut Flower Production with Mayan Vered, Owner/Operator of Flowerface

A farm tour and overview of perennial plants useful for cut flower production. We'll go over maintenance and culture of herbaceous and woody perennials and how they can fit into your  farm context.

Mayan runs Flowerface, a 1-acre cut flower farm on the Sa’anich peninsula, growing a wide variety of unique cut flowers, foliage, grasses and perennials. Mayan has a horticultural certificate from UBC and a decade of experience in the horticultural field. Flowerface started as a multi-site urban farm in Vancouver in 2015 and has evolved to a permanent home on Vancouver Island. Flowerface is based on a strong horticultural background brought to a farming lens and is a unique farm in its layout and use of perennial plantings.

Join us for a presentation of new and older technology for irrigation systems directed to small and mid-sized farms. Karen will focus on irrigation equipment for efficiency and effective application and answer questions such as ‘sprinklers verses drip, when and why to choice one option over the other?’ She will go over the equipment available to make your life easier; the length of time to operate for water efficiencies; how the water moves to the roots; the kinds of controls, manual or automatic and what is available; and what makes sense for your farm and your time.

Karen has been working in the Irrigation Industry since 1978. She is certified in Irrigation Design through the IIABC, has worked with the CRD and the Certification Board of the IIABC, and is past president of the IIABC and the Western Turfgrass Association. Karen has been working for water saving with a local distributor for irrigation on the Saanich Peninsula for over 30 years.
