New Member Orientation
| 1. Become a Member To get full access to this site and the benefits of the South Island Farmers Institute (SIFI for short. Pronounced Sci-fi for fun.), you must become a member. We have 2 types of membership:
If you’re not already a member, you can sign up directly through our website. If you’ve been receiving communications from us, that means you are registered in our system. To view your profile and check your membership status, click on “Member Login” in the top right corner. Type in the email you are receiving SIFI communications with, and click on “forgot password”. Follow the instructions to set a new password, and then login with the new password to view your profile. If you are a member, it will say so in your profile. If you are not, you will need to register. |
| 2. Set up your Profile Your profile is how to let other members know you exist. It also appears in our membership listing for the Public Directory so that the general public can find your farm. You can include as much or as little information as you wish in your profile, and for each line, you can choose who can view that information. Maybe you want your phone number available to other farmers, but not the general public. You can to choose that in your “privacy settings”. Your profile is also where you can view the events you are registered for and those you attended in the past. Under “Invoices and Payments”, you’ll see if you have any outstanding event payments or if you still need to pay your SIFI membership dues. To edit your profile, click on the "Member Login" in the top right corner and login or select "profile". |
| 3. Attend an Educational Event Educational events are at the core of what we do. Our field days, conferences, workshops and other events are designed for farmers by farmers. Our biggest event of the year is Farmer to Farmer Week, but we also hold workshops, farm tours and other events year round. All members will receive a newsletter about upcoming events and can also check here anytime to see if there are any events coming up. |
| 4. Join the Community Board This is where we get to communicate with other members between events. This is a new feature of our website and it’s just getting started. The more members use this board, the more useful it will become. If you have something you want to share or a problem you want to solve and want to reach out to other local farmers, post your query or ideas on the community board. Visit it now to see how you might use it now or in the future. |
| 5. Get Involved There are plenty of ways to get involved with SIFI. First of all, and most important: come to our events, introduce yourself and talk to other farmers in your community. If you want to help organize events, join the events committee. All our educational events are organized by volunteers and most are farmers, so we do most of our organizing work in the winter. And because we all run businesses, we are very action oriented and we record everything we do so that the committee members the following year can pick it up and run with it. Like a farm, our events run seasonally and we keep getting better at what we do every year. Of course if you want to dive in even deeper, you can run for the Board of Directors. Elections take place every year at our AGM during the Farmer to Farmer Conference. Since farming on the South Island involves a wide-range of farm businesses, it's important to have a Board that represents that dynamic. To that end we try to fill our board with folks with a diverse range of experiences and needs and the passion to bring forward new initiatives that support South Island Farmers. Get Involved. Send us an email. |
